Biography of Reverend Douglas Hunter

Reverend Douglas Hunter, Sr. was born March 3, 1941 to the late Will and Annie Hunter.  He is the youngest of twelve children.  At the age of 15, Reverend Hunter, along with his mother and brother relocated to Detroit, Michigan. He attend Northwestern High School in Detroit. In the year of 1961, at the age of 20, he relocated to Rochester, NY.

He was employed by the former Genesee Hospital and it was there where he met the love of his life, Dora Lawhorn. He was also employed by Great Lakes and Case Hoyt. August 15, 1964, he became wed to Dora Lawhorn of Georgetown, S.C. and to this union were born three children, Diane Bowens (Tim), Douglas Hunter, Jr. (Sara) and Kevin Hunter (Katie).  He and Dora are the proud grandparents of four: Kierra, Shequawna, Jerrell and Timani.

Rev. Hunter became a deacon of Mt. Zion Progressive M. B. Church, serving faithfully under the leadership of Reverend Raymond Williams. He would offer encouraging words to many and would always check on the sick and shut-in. If a church member was being admitted to the hospital or just needed someone to confide in, he would always offer prayer along with encouragement. Whatever was shared with him was held in the strictest of confidence.

He served in the capacity of Sunday School Superintendent from 1977 – 1993 and served as President of the Men’s Department for the Central Baptist Association for two years.

After professing his calling to the ministry, he became a licensed minister in October of 1994. He reached for higher heights and  acquired another accomplishment by becoming an ordained minister in November 1994.

A general election was held in March, 2001where he was unanimously voted as pastor of Mt. Zion Progressive Missionary Baptist Church where he has shown much love and dedication for the past twelve years.

His vision for the church is "Leading Souls to Christ” and through our prayers and with our support, we can help his vision become a reality.

Pastor Hunter is best known for his humbleness and dedication, never showing anger or discouragement.  He is truly an anointed and dedicated minister and loves the Lord with all his being.

“To God Be The Glory” is his motto. Praises and thanks to God Almighty for our pastor. We couldn't have asked for a better leaderPastor Hunter, we love and appreciate you here at Mt.
